Typically the bow is at an angle when played at the frog and as one moves the bow from the frog to the tip more of the hair is used, until the tip is reached and all of the hair is used and the bow is flat on the string.
When at the frog the player has the full weight of the hand, wrist and arm and less strength is needed to play at all volumes. Conversely at the tip the player has the least amount of strength and weight to create sound and more hair is needed.
